Sulphur which is contaminated with sulphur chlorides and iron halides is purified by contacting the contaminated sulphur with an aqueous medium maintained under superatmospheric pressure at a temperature above the m.p.of said contaminated sulphur to dissolve the impurities in the aqueous medium and separate the purified S from the aqueous phase. The preferred aqueous media are water and a dilute caustic solution. The contaminated sulphur may be produced as a by-product in the manufacture of CCl4 by the chlorination of CS2 and is passed in the form of molten droplets countercurrently through the aqueous medium which washes out the sulphur chloride and iron chloride, the molten sulphur being collected after passage through the aqueous phase and allowed to solidify. |
