An anti-inflammatory substance is isolated from grape seeds by extn. with a mixture of >=2 mutually miscible, plar organic solvents, to give a substance having an anti-inflammatory value 5. The anti-inflammatory value is the minimum quantity given orally in h/kg body weight, which causes a statistically significant decreases in carrageenin-induced oedema in rats. Typical solvent mixtures are of chloroform, methanol and opt. acetone, pref. as azeotropes. In an example, crushed grape seeds were extracted for 8 hours. At 53.5 degrees C with an aeotropic mixture of 87 pts. chloroform and 13 pts. of methanol. The solvent was evaporated and the residue had an anti-inflammatory value of 1.25.
|
