The chuck (2) with jaws (3) is mounted at one end of the hollow machine spindle (1). A chuck operating rod (5) runs through the centre of the spindle. A piston (6) is mounted at one end of the operating rod, while the other end has angled wedges which engage with the chuck clamps. Hydraulic fluid can be supplied to either side of the piston via a stationary distributor housing (8) from which reversible inlet and outlet connections run to a supply system. It incorporates a pressure reduction valve and a diverter. A three-way valve is mounted in the pressure line.
