The lathe has headstocks at both ends with one or two centrally-driven chucks and a slide unit. These components can be fixed or they can travel on common bed guideways. The lathe is designed for fast automatic machining cycles for long workpieces. The machining units (28,29) consists of mounting posts (11) for centrally-driven chucks (12) with synchronous motors (13). The guide bed (14) has sliding bores (15) for cylindrical guideways (9). The guides (14) are used simultaneously as piston rods with pistons (17) in cylinder bores (19) for providing longitudinal feed movements.
