Automatic foot released ski brake - has spring loaded slide to push rotating arm into snow

The ski-brake (1) is screwed to the ski through holes and a metal strip (7) slides in a guide and is normally held in position by the pressure of the skier's foot. Once the skier's foot is removed a spring inside the housing (2) pushes the strip (7) to the left and a toothed rack attached to the strip (7) rotates a pinion. The pinion is mounted on a transverse shaft which carries arms (8a) at each end. As the pinion rotates the arms (8a) move from the horizontal to the vertical position and dig into the snow. The arms thus act as a brake and bring the released ski rapidly to rest.
