[Also in Division H5] A welding device, for welding together two superimposed sheets each containing hemispheres, comprises upper and lower heated tools 506 and 516, each of which includes a series of upstanding tubular electrodes 511 and 520. The electrodes are provided with internal hemispherical surfaces connectable to vacuum, and the two sets of electrodes are adapted to engage each other around the peripheries of the hemispheres. The upper electrodes are connected via a wire 522 to the earth return of an H.F. source, and the lower electrodes are connected, when the upper tool is in its lowered operative position, to the output of the source by way of pin 524 and receiver 526. The tools are actuated by toggle mechanisms (see Figs. 1A and 1B, not shown) in such a way that the tools are initially forwarded on to the sheets, which are sucked into contact with the hemispherical surfaces of the electrodes, then moved slightly apart to allow accurate alignment of the sheets on the tools, and finally forwarded into clamping engagement in which position the welding is effected. |
