<p>The axial flow turbine or pump is of the type having a variable-blade (14) impeller (13) on an horizontal axis (3). Its shaft (8) is carried in a hub (15), the blade tips (25) being rotatably carried in a ring (20) connected with the rotor (21) of an electric generator or motor (21,22,23). The radial bearings are so arranged that the rotating unit (1), consisting of ring (20) and rotor (21), is centralised either by the bearings (52,50) or the bearings (50,51) only. Any other bearings (51 or 52) provide a constant bearing force against slow radial motion of the unit and a progressively increasing force under sudden radial motion.</p> |
