Stay mechanism for doors and gates - has cylinder with spring loaded wedges for stay rod locking

The stay arrangement is used for holding doors, gates, or hinged tables in an arbitrary position. The stay arrangement operates automatically without actuation of any holding arrangement. The mechanism has hollow cylinder with a longitudinal sliding rod. This rod moves between two brake elements (7,8) with wedging faces. These brake halves have semicircular cross section. The wedges are spring loaded and the preload of a brake element (7) spring (10) is adjusted by longitudinal movement of its support (14) relative to the fixed stop (6) of the brake element. The wedge blocks can be assembled in reverse order to provide braking effect in the opposite direction of the movement.
