The measuring rollers comprise a pair of tongue and grooved rollers 21, 22 for sensing variations in the sliver thickness which control the operation of the machine to improve the uniformity of the sliver, Upper rollers 12, 13 are mounted on arms 14, 14a and are weighted by spring plungers 18 which bear on a pressure bar 16. Pressure bar 16 can be released to allow access. Trumpet element 19 is mounted on a pivoted arm 25 to allow its removal in a direction parallel to the roller axes. The first roller pair 12, 12a is mounted in an adjustable gear box 15c which can be pivoted about axle 15d to allow increase of the distance between the roller pairs to suit the fibre staple length. Arm 26 is also pivotal about a bar 27 to allow access to the scrapers and lower rollers. A feeler 29 detects the presence of a sliver and in its absence operates a stop motion.
