The equipment is for handling loads with curved surfaces, particularly cylindrical rolls, having a body equipped with a controllable pressure member. This member comprises a number of components (15, 17) linked together one behind the other. A force can be exerted between the end components (17). Typically this can be by a rope, attached to the outermost component, passing through guides in the intermediate ones to a puller mechanism (20). Some at least of the components can be provided with pads on the side through which the rope is passed.
