1501948 Aromatic copolyamide fibres TEIJIN Ltd 18 Dec 1975 [27 Dec 1974 20 May 1975 (2)] 51844/75 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Fibre- or film-forming aromatic copolyamides comprise diamine units (1A) and (IB) -HN-Ar<SP>1</SP>-NH- and dicarboxylic acid units (2) -OC-Ar 2 -CO-, the total number of moles (1A)+(1B) being substantially equal to (2) with (1A) providing 7À5 to 40 mol per cent of the total recurring units. In the formulas Y 1 (independently in each unit) is -O-, -S-, -SO 2 -, -CO-, -NH-, -CH 2 -, or -CMe 2 -; Ar 1 and Ar 2 have their bonds coaxial or parallel and are phenylene, naphthalene or and Y 2 is as defined for Y 1 . They may be prepared by reacting a mixture of appropriate diamines or their hydrohalides with the diacid halide, preferably at -20‹ to 100‹ in an organic solvent in the presence of an acid acceptor and a halide of hydrogen or a Group I or II metal. There are 37 specific examples. Such polymers form solutions which can be readily wet spun and form fibres of high Youngs' modulus (area 400 g./d.) and tensile strength (over 15 g./d.). Reference is made to Specification 1,407,615. Wet spinning.-Processes for spinning the above polymers are also extensively described and claimed, such claims being directed to wetspinning into an aqueous coagulant bath characterized by (a) the use of various specific amide solvents to form the dope, (b) the presence of HHa or a Group I or II halide; (c) the use of a coagulant bath containing an inorganic salt in a concentration (C) related to the halide content of the dope (a) (bath mol/l.) and the mol per cent (x) of units (1A) in the polymer by the relation C # 0À1x+2À9a; and stretching the as-spun fibres at at least 1 : 3, e.g. 1 : 4 to 1 : 20. A film was also formed by casting followed by stretching. |
