<p>Suspended matter is removed from a liq., and partic. the accumulated sludge from a sewage pit, by an appts. comprising an air-tight cistern contg. water. The upper part of the cistern is connected to the inlet of a vacuum pump. A discharge pump, outside the cistern and below the level of the water, draws the latter through a filter and returns it to the pit. The vacuum created in the cistern during normal working, sucks the sludge from the pit into the cistern, where it settles. The sepd. water is picked up by the discharge pump and returned to the pit to keep the sludge, awaiting evacuation, in suspension. The appts. operates continuously so taht the time taken hitherto in putting the cistern under press., to evacuate the water, and then in recreating the vacuum to aspire the sludge, is saved.</p> |
