In order to protect liquids, in particular in swimming pools, warm-water pools and hot-water reservoirs, from direct insolation dirt and to insulate them with respect to energy loss, the liquid is covered with a floating insulating mat. The insulating mat is designed such that, in the manner of a solar collector, it uses the incident solar energy to increase the temperature of the liquid which is insulated with respect to cooling. It therefore comprises two foils fitted at a distance from each other. One foil is of a dark colour, e.g. black, and the other is translucent. The dark colour serves to increase the absorption of solar radiation. <IMAGE>
