1476785 Aromatic nitriles SUN VENTURES Inc 20 June 1974 [20 June 1973] 27372/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] The ammoxidation of organic compounds, in particular mono- or polyalkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons of the benzene or naphthaline series, is carried out in the absence of added oxygen using a supported vanadium oxide catalyst which has been pretreated at 300-600‹ C. and 1 atmosphere-100 p.s.i.g. with 0À1 to 1 mole of carbon monoxide per mole vanadium oxide. The feed hydrocarbon may be toluene, xylenes, alpha - methylnaphthalene, polymethylnaphthalenes, mono- and polyalkylanthracenes, mesitylene or durene. The example describes the ammoxidation of p-xylene to give p-toluonitrile and terephthalonitrile together with some benzonitrile. |
