Continuous measuring and adjusting of the degree of vulcanisation of the coating of a moving foam rubber-coated carpet is carried out by first forming a diven impression in the coating, then after a given period measuring the depth of the impression. The degree of vulcanisation may be regulated by adjusting the speed of travel of the carpet, or by switching on and off an auxiliary heat source. Appts. comprises a rotating roller which is in contact with the carpet and which is surrounded by a narrow ring. At a fixed distance behind the roller, in the direction of travel of the carpet, is a sensor, pref. in the form of a rotating roller on which is mounted a sensing wheel.
