Iron and steel is provided with a wear resistant coating by arc welding using a cored electrode of which the core is composed of a powder mixt. of Cr, Fe, graphite and a Ti compd., and which contains in addn. ferrochrome, crystalline Si or Si-Ca, metallic Mn and Ti. These are present in an amt. of 1-1.2% ferrochrome contg. 6-8 wt. % C, 12-13% Cr, 14-16% Mn, 0.6-0.8% crystalline Si or Si-Ca, 20-22% Fe, 2-3% Ti dioxide, 0.2-0.3% graphite, 0.6-1% Ti. The core pref. contains in addn. 0.5-3 wt. of a fluoropolymer to prevent pore formation. Neither flux nor an inert gas shield is required. For example a single layer of wear resistant material has the compn. 0.2% C, 9% Cr, 9.2% Mn, 0.2% Si, 0.13% Ti, balance Fe to give hardness 260-280 HB and a two layer deposit 0.26% C, 10.8% Mn, 10.6% Cr, 0.35% Si, 0.17% Ti, balance Fe to give hardness 230-240 HB.
