[Also in Division C5] Esters of the formula where R 4 and R 6 are saturated straight-chain hydrocarbyl radicals which together contain at least eleven carbon atoms, R 1 is hydrogen or alkyl and R is a hydrocarbyl radical are prepared by reacting a saturated straight-chain hydrocarbon having at least twelve carbon atoms with a carbohydrocarbyloxy carbene of formula :CR 1 COOR, where R and R 1 are as defined above. The hydrocarbon may be a C 12-50 paraffin while the carbone may be prepared in situ by the decomposition e.g. by heat or irradiation of a carbene precursor such as a diazo compound, a ketone or a diazirine.
