Antistatic backing is applied to a coating carrier, e.g. cellulose ester, from an aqueous soln. of an antistatic copolymer, esp a sulphonated N-phenylmaleic imide/styrene/ethylene and/or isobutylene, copolymer pref. having a mol wt. of 50,000-500,000 and containing up to 90 vol % of a swelling agent e.g. acetone for the carrier, based on the volume of soln. applied.
