1416286 Propionic acid HOECHST AG 21 Feb 1974 [3 March 1973] 7940/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Propionic acid is prepared by the hydrogenation of acrylic acid at 20‹ to 80‹ C. under pressures between 1 and 10 atmospheres absolute, using a carrier-supported metallic palladium catalyst prepared by partially saturating 40-80% a dry porous carrier with a palladium salt solvent, further impregnating the carrier with a palladium salt solution to saturation, and reducing to metallic palladium. The carrier may be silicic acid or active carbon, the palladium salt may be chloride or acetate dissolved in water. A fluidized bed catalyst is preferred with the use of circulating hydrogen.
