A cleaning apparatus movable on the ground for textiles in particular a universal apparatus for carpets, carpet bases, upholstery and the like having a device for the production of cleaning foam and for its application to the surface to be cleaned and having a suction blower for the drawing off of cleaning foam and/ or dirt from the surface to be cleaned whereby the air on the pressure side of the suction blower is guided via a compressed air main pipe to the device for the production of the cleaning foam. A separator for the impurities carried along by the suction air is provided between the pressure side of the suction blower and the device for the production of the cleaning foam. Upstream of the device for the production of the cleaning foam, a branch pipe for excess air is provided, the air throughput of which is adjustable by means of a control member.
