1474028 Grinding SSS PATENTS Ltd 2 Aug 1974 [28 Aug 1973] 40420/73 Heading B3B [Also in Division F2] A method of manufacturing a synchro-self shifting clutch of the type having a pawl and ratchet mechanism 11, 13 which initiates helical movement of an intermediate member 5 along helical splines 4 of a clutch hub 3 to initiate precise interengagement between clutch teeth 8, 2 on the intermediate member 5 and a clutch drum 1 comprises grinding the working surfaces of the clutch teeth 8, or grinding a datum diameter 34 for use in subsequent grinding of the working surfaces of the teeth 8, and/ or balancing the intermediate member and clutch hub 3 whilst torque is present between the intermediate member 5 and hub 3. During the grinding or balancing process torque is maintained between the intermediate member 5 and hub 3 by an apparatus comprising a hub 16 having helical splines 20 of the same hand as the splines 4 of the clutch hub 3 and engaging splines 28 on a sleeve 27 which is connected by a resilient coupling 26 to a sleeve 21. In use the hub 16 and sleeve 21 are connected by bolts 32 to the clutch hub 3 and intermediate member 5 respectively. Thereafter a nut 31 is screwed onto the end of the hub 16 to move the sleeve 27 helically relative to the hub 16 and thus apply a torque between the clutch hub 3 and intermediate member 5. |
