The dual circuit trailer pneumatic brakes are coupled to the supply line by a double valve with a pressure control piston which monitors the pressure level in the supply line and isolates the trailer brakes if the supply line breaks. The valve then applies the trailer brakes if the trailer reservoir level drops to a set value. The control valve has a differential piston whose ratio of piston areas corresponds to the set fraction of the reservoir pressure at which the emergency brakes are applied. The system is thus independent of the inital pressure in the reservoir, and does not require the reservoir pressure to reach a low level before braking operates.
