A bridging soln of a salt is contained in a vessel of nonconducting material with an internal half cell contacting the soln. Within the walls of the vessel is a liquid transition structure. made of an ionically transparent polymer (diffusion transparent) and this polymer is either a hydrated, absorbent polymer or a water repellent polymer with particles distributed through it either of inert material or of a salt which is electrochemically inactive in the sense that its presence in the polymer as such does not cause contamination of the bridging soln or the internal half cell.
