3-Alkyl-7-oxoalkylxanthines of the formula in which Alk is C1-C12 alkyl, and A is a C2-C6-alkylene radical, are prepared. These compounds are obtained by reacting a 3-monoalkylxanthine alkali metal salt at elevated temperature with an appropriate halo ketone to introduce the group -ACOCH3 in position 7. The compounds can be used as vasodilators.
