<p>1467146 Electrolytically preventing depositformation during polymerization HOECHST AG 1 May 1974 [4 May 1973] 19092/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division C7] The formation of deposits on the walls of metallic reactors in emulsion, suspension or precipitation polymerizations in an aqueous medium is prevented by placing an inert anode in the reactor or in a supply-line thereto and applying an external current between it and the vessel walls (connected cathodically) sufficient to cause hydrogen production. The production of polyacrylonitrile optionally including as comonomer vinylidene chloride or methyl acrylate, from an aqueous acidic redox-catalysed system is described. The vessel may be of stainless steel and the anode of graphite Pt, Ir, Rb or their alloys. A c.d. < 1 m.A/cm.<SP>2</SP> is suggested and conditions disclosed are 5-19 V at 100-200 mA D.C.</p> |
