Rayon fibres modified with polyvinyl pyrrolidone - giving improved liquid retention capacity, for sanitary towels and pads

Rayon fibres with improved liquid retention capacity are obtd. by incorporating an N-vinyl-amide polymer, in a regenerated cellulose matrix, the polymer having pref. polyvinyl-pyrrolidone. The modified fibres have superior liquid retention capacity while still possessing to a large extent the physical props. of unblended rayon. The rayon is used for the prodn. of hygienic towels and sanitary pads. The polyvinyl-pyrrolidone has a mol. wt. >10,000, pref. 100,000-400,000 and a K value 50-100. Pref. other water-soluble high polymers esp. anionic polymers such as carboxylic polymers are also added to the viscose. Pref. polymers are CMC and/or a salt of a polyacrylic acid.
