Prodn. of piperidine derivs. of formula (I) or their acid addn. salts comprises reacting benzene with tetrahydropyridines (IV) in presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (R1 = H; 1-6C (un)branched alkyl; opt. halogenated or alkylated aralkyl; 1-3C alkyl substd. by OH, alkoxy or aryloxy; or opt. ring-halogenated, -alkoxylated or -alkylated aryloxoalkyl. Alkylene have 1-3C). Opt. where R1 = benzyl this is converted, e.g. by hydrogenation, to R1 = H. (I) are useful as pharmaceuticals, esp. CNS stimulants, or as intermediates for similar cpds. The reaction takes place smoothly with good to very good yields.
