1473210 Making composite wire or rod G RAU 10 Oct 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 44019/74 Heading B3A [Also in Division C7] A wire or rod metallic composite comprising a matrix metal with a powder additive distributed as separate cords extending along the length may be made by filling a matrix metal pipe with additive powder, reducing the diameter by mechanical forming, e.g. hammering and annealing and then bundling a number of the assemblies together and mechanically forming the bundle into a wire or rod of reduced diameter. The additive powders may be CdO, SnO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , MgO, CaO, ZrO 2 , PbO, Nb-Ti, W, Mo, carbides, nitrides, borides, graphite, glass and organic material. The matrix metal may be Ag, Cu or their alloys. The powder filled metal pipes, e.g. Ag-CdO 0À3 mm. diameter, formed by hammering, drawing and intermediate annealing were bundled in a Ag tube 20 mm. diameter and drawn to a 2 mm. diameter wire, the powdered CdO cords forming 10% wt. The wider Ag tube may be removed after drawing and the assembly sintered to form electrical contacts. |
