In containers charged with salt solns. in a largely stationary state, which utilise the heating of melting as a means of storing energy, and in which crystallisation is induced by grafting, separation of the mixt. is reduced by differential grafting in the upper and lower regions of the soln. Thus the soln. at the bottom of the container is grafted with material giving water rich crystals (which are therefore relatively light) and the soln. at the top of the container is grafted with material giving crystals with a low water content (and which are therefore relatively heavy). The differential wt. of the crystals formed opposes the natural tendency of the mixt. to settle out at the bottom of the container. The differential grafting treatment allows the use of a greater depth of soln. than in previous units of this type. The containers are esp. useful in the form of glass cells filled with the salt soln. to store energy from the sun, and allow larger units to be made than previously.
|
