<p>An embossed sheet material, e.g. a floor covering, includes an embossed foamed plastics layer, the thinner sections of which are formed of crushed cells, a colour pattern on the embossed surface in registry with the embossed pattern, and an overlying thin wear layer of transparent resin, the light reflective characteristics of which are different for the raised areas of foam than for the thinner areas. Such a sheet is made by applying a foaming layer to a backing felt or paper layer, heating the layer to semi-cure but not foam it, printing a pattern on the layer, applying a wear layer, heating the printed layer to foam it, and finally embossing the foamed layer whilst still hot between a configured roller and a smooth back-up roller rotatated by movement of sthe sheet. The foam layer may be PVC polyethylene or polypropylene, as may the wear layer.</p> |
