New phosphonylated formamidine derivs. are of formula (I), in which R1 is alkyl, halogen, haloalkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, haloalkoxy, haloalkylthio, alkylsulphonyl, opt. substd. phenyl or phenoxy, NO2 or CN; R2 and R3 are H, alkyl, alkoxy or cycloalkyl; R4 is alkyl; X is O or S; Y is OR4, SR4, NHR4 or N(R4)2; and n is 0-5. (I) are insecticides and acaricides, coupled with low toxicity to warm blooded animals and low phytotoxicity. They can be used in plant protection, in the stored prods. sector, in the hygiene sector, and in the veterinary sector against injurious ectoparasites(by orally, dermal or parenteral admin.). Specific cpds. (I) include N-(4-chloro-o-tolyl)-N'-methyl-(diethylphosphonyl)-formamidine. In an example, this is prepd. by passin methylamine into a cooled soln. of N-(4-chloro-o-tolyl)-O,O-diethylphosphonoyl)-formamidine. In an example, this is prepd. by passing methylamine into a cooled soln. of N-(4-chloro-o-tolyl)-(O,O-diethylphosphono)-carbonimide chloride in benzene.
