A domestic coffee making machine as in 2532277 is fitted with a heating element and a pump which provides the hot water. A safety circuit automatically switches off the main heating element but keeps the coffee hot. The safety circuit has an indicator lamp (138) which lights up when the manually operated switch (100) is closed. A thermostat, which is actuated by the temperature of the cold water in the machine, closes the switch (94) so that current flows through the heating elements (58)(84). When the water temperature reaches boiling point the switch (94) is opened so that the elements (58) (84) are switched off but a small current still flows through the hot plate element (130).
