The device is for swivelling away a safety grid on a working platform during feeding or extraction of items by means of a mobile mechanical handler where a ram is fitted to the mechanical handler. This ram (7, 12) automatically swivels the grid (2), or part of the grid, from the edge of the working platform (1). The ram (12) is length adjustable and can be adjusted in height with respect to the load carrier (5). The mechanical handler can be a forked lift stacker and the ram (7, 12) is arranged on the lifting mast. The ram is hinged to the lifting mast so that is can swivel about a horizontal axis. A stop roller (11, 14) is fixed to the front free end (8, 13) of the ram (7, 12).
