1471002 Rendering finely-divided material hydrophobic WACKER-CHEMIE GmbH 8 July 1974 [17 July 1973] 30092/74 Headings C1A and C1N Particulate materials are rendered hydrophobic by mixing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal organosiliconate (which may be a monomeric compound of formula RSi(OH) 2 OM or polymeric with units of formula RSiO(OM)) and an aqueous suspension of the finely-divided material which contains dissolved therein a metal salt that will react with the alkali metal organosiliconate to form a metal siliconate that is not more than sparingly soluble in water, and isolating the treated material from the suspension (e.g. by centrifuging). The particulate material is preferably a metal oxide or carbonate or an organic pigment, although other suitable materials are listed, and the metal salt is preferably a Group IIA halide. The products may be used as fillers for mouldings and coatings, as constituents of fire-extinguishing powders, as thickeners for liquids and as components of paints. |
