1449553 Control lever assemblies R HURET and J HURET 29 Oct 1974 [7 Nov 1973] 46654/74 Heading B7E A control lever assembly for a bicycle changespeed device comprises an axle 2 adapted to be fixed to the bicycle, a control lever 3 mounted to pivot about the axle, a helical spring 1 frictionally engageable with the axle 2 and having an end 1a adapted to be connected to a control cable 14 of the change-speed device, and a pair of abutment faces 3f, 3g on the lever 3 each associated with a respective end of the spring 1. In operation tensioning force applied to the cable 4 by a spring of the change-speed device normally causes the end 1a of the spring 1 to which the cable is connected to be urged such that the spring is wound more tightly on the axle 2 thereby holding the cable 4, and also the lever 3, in the desired position. If however the lever is moved in the direction 5, Fig. 2, one of the abutment faces, 3f, bears against the associated end 1a of the spring 1 such that the spring is unwound from axle 2 and is free to move, as is the cable 4, with the lever 3. In the opposite direction of motion of the lever the other of the abutment faces 3g, bears against the end 1b of the spring associated therewith to again unwind the spring from the axle. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 the lever 3 is provided with a pair of recesses 3d, 3e extending parallel to the axle 2, the abutment faces 3f, 3g being provided by respective walls of these recesses and the relative widths of the recesses and dispositions of the recesses and spring ends being such that when the face 3g is engaged with the adjacent end 1b of the spring 1 the other end 1a of the spring is not engaged by the walls of the recess 3d and vice versa. The end 1a of the spring 1 to which the cable 4 is connected is formed as an eyelet through which the cable passes so that an enlargement 4b on the cable end can bear on the eyelet. The alternative embodiment illustrated in Fig. 3 is similar to that in Figs. 1 and 2 except that a bush 10 is interposed between the lever 3 and axle 2. |
