The screen has a large number of adjacent illuminant strips. After application of these strips, the cathode side of the screen surface is coated with a thin Al foil. After application the illuminant strip and before application of Al foil, a 1-20 mu coating is applied. The coating has a basic colour which deviates from that of the illuminant strips as little as possible. The coating is not transparent, but as translucent as possible. The coating can withstand temps. of 380 degrees - 450 degrees C. Fluorescent screens having the illuminant coating applied in stripe form frequently show the Al backing foil between the strips if these are not close enough together, even when the tube is not operating. This defect is avoided by introduction of an intermediate coating as in the invention. In an example, a glass surface for a cathode ray tube was coated in parallel adjacent strips with 3 illuminants in succession and then sprayed with K silicate to leave a silicic acid layer before final application of Al foil. The treatment effectively filled any space between strips which might otherwise allow the Al foil to be visible to the viewer.
