1470049 Soldering RAYCHEM CORP 19 March 1974 [21 March 1973] 13584/73 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] Means for joining items, e.g. cables, tubes or waveguides comprise one or more heat recoverable members, a quantity of solder, one or more electrically conductive deformable members and, optionally one or more undeformable members, the undeformable members if used controlling the dimensions of the joint. The deformable member may be attached to, or integral with, one of the items joined or with the undeformable member, and the undeformable member may be integral with the heatshrinkable member. The heat recoverable and undeformable members may be insulating or electrical conductors. Apertures may be provided in outer members for application of heat to inner members when joining coaxial cables. In Fig. 4 the centre conductors 18, 18a of the coaxial cables 16, 16a are joined using a heat-shrinkable sleeve 4, a metal tube 2 and solder 5, the solder being initially in the form of a ring surrounding the tube and passing via the hole 3 when melted, while the outer conductors 17, 17a are joined by a pair of non-deformable electrically conducting members 6, 7, the connections between the cables and these members and between the members being made by solder-impregnated metallic braid 12, 12a, 14 in heat-shrinkable sleeves 11, 11a, 13, the conductors 18, 18a being centered by insulating spacers 15, 15a. In an alternative method (Figs. 13, 14, not shown) a single electrically conducting undeformable sleeve (44) with deformable tapering finger-like extensions (45, 45a) and a heat-shrinkable cover (46) containing solder are used for joining the outer conductors, this sleeve being of a larger diameter than the outer insulation of at least one of the cables, enabling the sleeve (44) and cover (46) to be slid to one side while the inner conductors are being joined. |
