A storage system has a plurality of storage frames. The storage frames are filled or emptied by a gantry having a plurality of fork tines which can be shifted between a first and second operative positions which are 90 DEG apart. The tine can also be tilted as it is moved between an advanced and withdrawn position relative to the storage racks.
