[Also in Divisions F1 and F4] A water-jet engine operated by the action of cavitation comprises a hollow tubular member A having an inlet 1 and a jet outlet 2 for the passage of liquid and including a pressurereducing section 3 of diminishing cross-section in the inlet-to-outlet direction for the acceleration of liquid therethrough, a cavitation-forming section 4 situated subsequent to the pressurereducing section so that cavitation of the liquid takes place with consequential release of gas (oxygen) dissolved therein, means (not shown) for the introduction of combustible fuel, and an ignition system 5 in the cavitation-forming section, the resulting explosion causing the expulsion of liquid through the outlet 2 so that a reactive propulsive force is exerted upon the member A and so upon any craft attached thereto. Gaseous starting fuel is introduced at 37 and ignited by a plug 36. Various arrangements of cavitation sections, means for introducing primary and auxiliary fuels, ignition systems and methods of starting are described. A tube capable of in-and-out motion may be inserted at the outlet 2 and/or a flexible tube may be connected to the outlet and bent to any desired direction by control wires, thus dispensing with a rudder. |
