The iron comprises a temp. selector knob, and an electrically heated sole plate with a steam generating chamber. Above the sole plate is a water tank with a valve stem which controls supply of water to the steam generating chamber and which is opened or closed by an actuator button. The actuator button is coupled to the temp. selector knob, and can only open the valve when the temp. selector knob is set to the steam temp. range. Pref. the temp. selector knob and actuator button are mounted coaxially one inside the other. The head of the valve stem may be coupled to a two-arm rocker which is actuated by the actuator button and which is mounted in the upper wall portion of the water tank by means of a pivot pin.
