The plies may overlap in the tread region (Figs. 4/6) to form a tread reinforcement, or edges of the plies may be axially spaced, with a separate tread reinforcement 12 overlapping the spaced ply edges. Each carcass ply is formed from a single cable or a small number of cables with the or each cable being arranged such that a portion extends from the bead region to an apex at the radially outer edge of the ply and returns to the bead region. The portion may form a loop (Fig. 2) or a substantially U configuration (Fig. 5). The cable(s) in each bead region reinforce the bead so that the conventional bead wire may be omitted. The tyre of Fig. 5 may also include a conventional tread reinforcing belt. |
