1468695 Dehydro-oligomerization of diisopropylbenzene BASF AG 30 July 1974 [31 July 1973] 33517/74 Heading C5E Colourless dehydro-oligomers of diisopropyl benzene having an average degree of polymerization of 3 to 30 comprise m- and p-diisopropylbenzene units in an average weight ratio m : p of 8 : 1 to 5 : 4. They may be prepared by reacting (i) a mixture obtained from the Friedel- Craft reaction of benzene with propene comprising 50-80% m-isomer, 10-40% p-isomer and up to 15% non-copolymerizable organic compounds with (ii) an organic peroxide compound at 130-230‹ C. in the presence of (iii) a reducing agent immiscible with the organic phase. Compounds used in the examples are (ii) di-t-butylperoxide, t-butylphenyl phthalide hydroperoxide; (iii) phosphorous acid, sodium hydroborate and cadmium grit. The exemplified products have 5 to 7 or 6 to 9 monomer units.
