1467997 Superconductive coils IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 8 Oct 1975 [15 Oct 1974] 44599/74 Heading H1P A superconductive coil is wound on a stainless steel former 1 with end flanges 3, 4 of a central cylinder 2; surface coated with a refractory layer 6 of alumina by flame spraying. The winding 5 is of unreacted wire having niobium filaments 7 embedded in a tin containing matrix overlain by a diffusion resistant coating 9; the wire layers being separated by a glass fibre sheet 10. After winding the former and coil are heated to 600-800‹ C. to diffuse tin into the niobium and form a filamentary intermetallic compound thereof; after which the former and coil are impregnated with e.g. epoxy resin. Alternatively the former may be of titanium or an alloy thereof, or bronze, and the refractory layer may be silica or carbon or a carbide or nitride. Other methods of application may be used. |
