The oven for cooking or roasting purposes comprises banks of pebbles which are hermetically sealed within a container. The pebbles are preheated by a timber fire, the fire is removed, and the heat retained by the pebbles is used for cooking. The oven may be used outdoors and for cooking exotic vegetable preparations. The articles for cooking may be individually wrapped in layers of aluminium foil and placed in an aluminium cooking tray. The oven may incorporate two interspaced horizontal layes of pebbles, with the articles for cooking mounted on a grill which is located between the two pebble layers.
