<p>Sulphur bridge contg. polymers are of formulae (III) and (IV): Y is p-phenylene, R1, R2 are each 1-20C (un)satd. aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, heterocyclic or aromatic radical, S, SO, SO2, CO or O can exist as hetero bridges; n is 5-1000; X is Cl, Br or I. (IV) is prepd. by heating (III) to >80 degrees C. (III) and (IV) can be prepd. without salts arising which have to be removed. The degree of polymerisation can be 10-100. Solns. of (IV) can be used as water resistant lacquers for e.g. wood, metal and cement products. In an example, methylthiohydroquinone was reacted with a dicarboxylic acid e.g. maleic acid to give a dithioether (I). 360 pts. of (I) was reacted with a dihalide e.g. Br-(CH2)6-Br, to give a water sol. polymer which an heating to 100 degrees C for 10 mins. resulted in a water-insol. polymer contg. S bridges. No salt was produced.</p> |
