发明名称 ARBORS FOR ANNULAR HOLE CUTTERS
摘要 1466961 Arbors E D HOUGEN 22 Feb 1974 [26 Feb 1973] 8065/74 Heading B3C [Also in Division B5] An arbor for an annular hole cutter comprises a shank 32 having a rear end adapted to be secured to a rotary driving member 40 and a forward end adapted to support a cup-shaped annular cutter 14 having cutter teeth 58 for cutting a circular groove through a workpiece 12 which simultaneously forms a round slug within side walls of the cutter 14, said shank 32 having a central axial bore 34, a pilot member 42 axially slidable in said bore 34, a spring 70 biased sleeve 60 for holding said pilot member 42 axially outwardly beyond the front end of the shank, said shank having a slot 64 which receives a pin 66 fixed diametrically across the sleeve 60 to limit the axial movement of the sleeve on the shank; the pin acting, e.g. through a plunger 68 to hold said pilot member in its forward and outward position, the sleeve 60 having a flange 62 whereby, after a hole cutting operation and with a slug retained in the cutter 14, the flange serves as an abutment for driving the sleeve forwardly on the shank to cause the pilot member to eject the slug. The arbor may be part of a drilling fixture (Fig. 1, not shown) which has a guide bush 24 for the sleeve 60 and a yoke 28 which acts in conjunction with the flange 62 to eject the slug. The end of the pilot member 42 may be formed to pierce a sheet metal workpiece or drill a pilot hole therein before the cutter 14 engages the workpiece (Figs. 7-10, not shown). the piercing or cutting part may be tapered to continually wedge the pilot member into the slug to firmly retain it. When drilling conduit or frame members the slug may be positively retained on the pilot member by a ball and spring detent (Fig. 10, not shown) or by other detent means. For drilling thick workpieces 130 (Fig. 11), the pilot member 124 has a drilling tip 126 and a shoulder 128 adjacent thereto which engages the workpiece surface after only a shallow pilot hole is drilled. As the arbor and cutter are moved towards the workpiece the pilot member initially engages the workpiece under the bias of spring 70 which is insufficient to cause drilling. The pilot member is retracted by the arbor feed until a spring detent 138 engages a shoulder 134 which produces a greater feed force to cause drilling of the pilot hole. When the shoulder 128 engages the workpiece a higher feed force is generated to overcome the spring detent 138 and shoulder 134 so that the pilot member is then retracted against the spring 70 and without further drilling of the pilot hole.
