The safety seat rests upon lengthways runners which are connected to the casing of helical springs under compression. Inclined springs under tension span between the top of the casing and a fixed plate on the floor. The assembly is restrained by release bolts. A lateral bar the width of the vehicle is mounted near to the front of the vehicle and joined to a similar lateral bar by a longitudinal rod. In an accident involving crushing of the front end, the bars release the bolts which free the springs and the seats tip backwards and move backwards. This prevents the occupants from hitting the windscreen and also protects their legs.
