Device for operating a motor vehicle gearbox, of the type including means for braking (slowing down) the gearwheels of the gearbox prior to engagement of the reverse gear ratio by interaction of the members for engaging this ratio with elements for actuating a synchromesh associated with one of the forward gear ratios of the gearbox, characterised in that the actuating elements comprise a fork (52) for controlling the synchromesh (54) linked in axial translation to a control rod (48) parallel to the primary and secondary shafts of the gearbox and an arm (62) for driving the rod (48) for controlling the fork (52), linked in translation to the latter and one end of which interacts with a retractable lever (64) mounted on the reverse gear sliding gear (32), the device including a finger (18) linked in translation and in rotation to the reverse gear control finger (16) and the end (58) of which is capable of interacting with a limit stop (63) associated with the said drive arm. <IMAGE>
