<p>Under compression closure a self-sealing flexible plug is withheld from valve bore passage entry. Lateral expansion into the bore would grip the plug, to inhibit free opening and increase the plug's wear. An internally derived compression localizes lateral expansion to the bore perimeter. The valve stem (20) in a screwed body sleeve (29) carries the plug (28). The stem is end flanged inside the plug. Axial plug compression, between the inside flange and an outside thrust washer (32) ridges (39) urges the plug outwards. A stem nut (24) and spring (26) in the handwheel (22) adjust the ridge height.</p> |
