Alkynols prepn. from acetylene and aldehydes - with cuprous acetylide on alumina as catalyst

Prepn. comprises reacting an aldehyde with acetylene at an acetylene partial press. of 2 (pref. 0.4-2) atm. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a water-insoluble cuprous acetylide complex on a transitional alumina support (i.e. with an H2O/Al2O3 molar ratio of 0.02-0.5 and a specific surface of >=10, pref. 100-500 m2/g). The process is esp. useful for preparing butynediol and propargyl alcohol from formaldehyde. The catalyst pref. contains 5-25 wt.% Cu and also 2-3 wt.% Bi to suppress acetylene polymerise.
